John A. Hilton,
3rd Generation Potter
John A. Hilton was born in 1929 as the last son of Shuford D. Hilton and
grandson of John Wesley Helton. The Hilton's were known for usable, functional
pieces, and John continues his work in that same tradition. John Wesley Hilton,
who began the pottery industry for the Hilton family after the Civil War,
operated the Hilton Pottery Company with his three sons, Shuford, E.A. and
Claude. The shop was located near Propst Crossroads community on Hwy #10 in
Catawba County and closed after WWII. John fires in a gas kiln and produces folk
pottery from commercial clay bodys and hand dug local clay. His shop is located
in Lincoln county, North Carolina and shown by appointment only. Contact John at
